A great barbecue relies on more than just good food, proper maintenance, safety precautions, and cooking techniques are key to perfect results. Whether you use gas, charcoal, or electric, these tips will help you master outdoor cooking.

BBQ Maintenance

1. Clean After Every Use – Scrub grates while

warm with a wire brush, then wipe with oil to prevent rust.

2. Deep Clean Seasonally – Remove grease build-up from burners (gas) or ash (charcoal) to avoid flare-ups.

3.Check Gas Connections – For gas BBQs, inspect hoses for cracks and test for leaks with soapy water.

4. Store Properly – Cover your BBQ when not in use and keep charcoal in a dry place.

BBQ Safety

1. Position Wisely – Place your BBQ on a stable,

non-flammable surface away from fences, trees, and furniture.

2. Never Leave Unattended – Keep children and pets at a safe distance while cooking.

3. Have a Fire Extinguisher Ready – Keep a bucket of sand, water, or a fire blanket nearby for emergencies.

4. Avoid Lighter Fluid Overuse – Excess fluid can cause dangerous flare-ups. Use natural firelighters instead.

5. Mist Bottle - Keep a spray bottle of water handy to tame small flare-ups.

Lighting Your BBQ Charcoal BBQs

- Use a ‘chimney starter’ (no chemicals needed) for even heat.

- Arrange coals in a ‘two-zone setup’ (hot side for searing, cooler side for slow cooking).

- Wait until coals are ash-covered and white (about 20-30 mins) before cooking.

Gas BBQs

- Open the lid before turning on the gas to prevent dangerous gas build-up.

- Light according to manufacturer instructions (usually: turn on gas, then ignite burners).

- Preheat for 10-15 minutes to burn off residue and ensure even cooking.

- Don’t forget to source your gas from a super local supplier such as www.FestivalGas.co.uk

Cooking Tips for Perfect Results

1. Oil the Grill, Not the Food – Brush oil onto hot grates to prevent sticking.

2. Don’t Press Burgers – Squeezing out juices leads to dry meat. Flip only once.

3. Use a Meat Thermometer – Ensure safe cooking temps:

- Chicken: 75°C

- Pork: 70°C

- Beef/lamb (medium): 60-65°C

4. Rest Your Meat – Let steaks and burgers sit for 5 mins before serving for juicier results.

5. Try Indirect Cooking – For larger cuts (like whole chicken), move food to the cooler side to avoid burning.

For Extra Flavour

• Experiment with wood chips (e.g. hickory, applewood) for a smokey flavour.

With these tips, your BBQ will stay in top shape, cook safely, and deliver delicious meals all summer long. Happy grilling!
