Celebrate the perfect picnic snack or meal packed full of protein

ree

Every year on 12th June, food lovers around the world celebrate International Falafel Day, a day dedicated to the crispy, flavourful, and protein-packed Middle Eastern delight. Whether stuffed in pitta, served with hummus, or enjoyed as a snack, falafel is a versatile and delicious dish that’s also naturally vegan.

The Origins of Falafel

Falafel’s exact origins are debated, with both Egypt and Lebanon claiming its invention. Traditionally made from chickpeas or broad beans, falafel has been a staple in Middle Eastern cuisine for centuries. Its popularity has since spread worldwide, thanks to its rich flavour, satisfying texture, and plant-based goodness.

Why We Love Falafel

• Nutritious – Packed with protein, fibre, and vitamins.

• Vegan & Gluten-Free – A great option for plant-based diets.

• Versatile – Perfect in wraps, salads, or as a mezze dish.

• Deliciously Crispy – Golden on the outside, soft and herby inside.

Easy Homemade Falafel Recipe

Making falafel from scratch is easier than you think! This recipe uses tinned chickpeas for convenience and classic Middle Eastern spices for authentic flavour.

Ingredients:

(Makes 12-15 falafels)

2 x 400g tins chickpeas, drained (or 240g dried chickpeas, soaked overnight)

1 small onion, roughly chopped

3 garlic cloves

30g fresh parsley

30g fresh coriander

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

½ tsp chilli powder (optional)

1 tsp baking powder

2 tbsp plain flour

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

Vegetable oil (for frying)

Method:

1. Blend Ingredients – In a food processor, pulse chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, and coriander until coarse (not puréed).

2. Season – Transfer to a bowl and mix in cumin, coriander, chilli powder, baking powder, flour, salt, and pepper.

3. Shape – Roll mixture into golf-ball-sized patties (if too wet, add a little more flour).

4. Cook – Heat oil in a pan (about 2cm deep) over medium heat. Fry falafels for 3-4 minutes per side until golden. Alternatively, bake at 200°C (180°C fan) for 20-25 mins, flipping halfway.

5. Serve – Enjoy in warm pitta with hummus, tahini, salad, and pickles! Now you’re ready to host a Mezze Night for family and friends!

Falafel is more than just food, it’s a symbol of shared culture and culinary joy. This 12th June, why not whip up a batch and celebrate this global favourite?
