Encourage young minds to grow this Children’s Gardening Week!

May is the perfect month to dig in the dirt, as it marks Children’s Gardening Week from 23rd to 31st May, a time to connect young hands and curious minds with the magic of growing food and flowers. This annual celebration encourages families and schools to swap screen time for soil time, planting the seeds of a lifelong love for nature.

When teaching children about plants, start with the basics: a seed is like a tiny lunchbox. Inside, it carries its own food to sprout. Explain that roots act as drinking straws, pulling water from the soil, while stems are lifts sending that water up to the leaves. Don’t forget the sun, photosynthesis is a big word, but kids can understand “leaves are solar panels that make plant food.”

Hands-on lessons are best. Let them poke a bean seed into a clear cup of damp cotton balls to watch roots appear. Teach the “needs” chant: water, sun, air, and space. For a fun sensory activity, have them crush a mint leaf or smell a tomato plant, they’ll discover plants communicate through scent. Finally, show them that a dandelion is not just a weed, but an early meal for bees. By nurturing a single seed, children learn patience, responsibility, and the joy of watching life unfold.
