Is your pillow a pain in the neck?

March marks National Bed Month, an annual campaign by The Sleep Council to highlight the importance of a good night’s sleep and the role your bed and bedding play in achieving it. While we often focus on mattresses, one key element that’s easy to overlook is your pillow. The right pillow can make all the difference to your sleep quality, posture, and overall wellbeing.
Choosing the perfect pillow starts with understanding your sleep position. Side sleepers typically need a firmer, thicker pillow to support the neck and keep the spine aligned. Back sleepers should opt for a medium-thick pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head too far forward. Stomach sleepers on the other hand, benefit from a soft, thin pillow to prevent neck strain.
Material matters too. Memory foam pillows offer excellent support and contour to your head and neck, while feather or down pillows provide a luxurious, soft feel. For allergy sufferers, hypoallergenic options like microfibre or latex are ideal.
Don’t forget to replace your pillow every 1-2 years, as they lose their shape and support over time. A worn-out pillow can lead to discomfort, poor sleep, and even neck pain.
This Bed Month, take the time to assess your pillow and invest in one that suits your sleep style. After all, a good night’s rest starts with the right support. Sweet dreams!
