Do you know what you need to drive in mainland Europe?
Planning a European road trip? The freedom of the open road can be enticing and give you a flexible holiday adventure. Before you set off, it’s essential to ensure your car meets all legal requirements for driving in mainland Europe. Failure to comply could result in fines, vehicle seizures, or even invalidated insurance. Here’s what you need to know before hitting the road.

1. UK Driving Licence & Documentation
You must carry:
• A full, valid UK driving licence (provisional licences are not valid abroad).
• Your vehicle’s V5C logbook (or a VE103 form if hiring/leasing).
• Proof of insurance (check your policy covers European travel—some require a "green card"). • Passport or ID card (required at borders).
2. GB Sticker or UK Number Plate
Since 2021, UK cars must display either:
•A UK identifier (e.g., "UK" or "United Kingdom") on the number plate, or
• A separate white GB sticker with black text if your plate doesn’t have the UK symbol (some countries e.g., Spain still require a physical GB sticker regardless).
3. Headlamp Beam Converters
UK cars have right-hand drive headlights, which can dazzle oncoming drivers in Europe. Use beam deflectors or adjust your headlights manually if possible.
4. Warning Triangle & High-Vis Vest
Many European countries require:
• A warning triangle (mandatory in France, Spain, Germany, etc.).
• A high-visibility vest for each occupant (must be accessible inside the car, not in the boot).
5. Breathalysers (France Only)
France previously required drivers to carry two NF-approved breathalysers, but this rule is no longer enforced. However, it’s still wise to have one.
6. Crit’Air Sticker (France & Low-Emission Zones)
If driving in Paris, Lyon, or other French cities, you may need a ‘Crit’Air emissions sticker’. Check zones in advance to avoid fines.
7. Speed Camera Warnings
In France, it’s illegal to use speed camera detectors (even on sat-navs and smartphones). Disable alerts to avoid penalties.
8. Motorway Vignettes
(Switzerland, Austria, etc.)
Some countries require a toll sticker (vignette) for motorway use. Buy these in advance at border crossings or online.
9. Extra Equipment by Country
• Spain: Spare glasses if you wear them.
• Germany: First aid kit recommended.
• Italy: Snow chains may be required in winter.
10. Check Brexit Changes
Since Brexit, UK drivers may need:
• An International Driving Permit (IDP) in some countries (check gov.uk).
• Longer passport validity (at least 3 months beyond your stay).
Final Tips
• Inform your insurer before travelling.
• Carry spare bulbs (required in some countries).
• Research local driving laws (e.g., priority to the right in France).
By preparing in advance, you can enjoy a hassle-free European road trip. Safe travels!
