One of the most iconic events in the British royal calendar, ‘Trooping the Colour, will take place on Saturday, 14th June, in London. This grand military parade marks the official birthday of King Charles III, bringing together tradition, pageantry, and national pride. Here’s what to expect from this year’s celebrations.

A Centuries-Old Tradition

Dating back to the 17th century, Trooping the Colour was originally a military exercise to ensure soldiers recognised their regiment’s flag (or "colour") in battle. Today, it has evolved into a dazzling display of British heritage, featuring over 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians from the Household Division.

What Happens on the Day?

The ceremony follows a well-established format:

The Royal Procession – King Charles III travels from Buckingham Palace down The Mall to Horse Guards Parade in a royal carriage or on horseback, escorted by the Household Cavalry.

The Parade & Trooping – The Foot Guards and the Mounted Band perform precise drills while the selected regiment’s colour is trooped in front of the troops.

The Flypast – The event culminates with a spectacular ‘RAF flypast’ over Buckingham Palace, watched by the royal family from the balcony.

How to Watch Trooping the Colour

While tickets for the seated stands at Horse Guards Parade are allocated via a public ballot (usually announced months in advance), crowds can gather along The Mall and near Buckingham Palace for free. The event is also broadcast live on BBC One and Sky News, ensuring everyone can enjoy the spectacle.

A Day of National Celebration

Beyond the military precision, Trooping the Colour is a chance for the public to show their support for the monarchy. Union Jack flags wave, street parties take place, and social media buzzes with patriotic pride. For those in London, it’s an unforgettable experience complete with the sound of marching bands and the sight of the King’s Guard in their scarlet tunics and bearskin hats.

How to Get Involved

Let’s be real, we’re huge supporters for any excuse for a celebration cake, so why not:
