Make sure you enjoy Bonfire Night safely!

As we all know Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night involves fireworks displays, bonfires, and festivities to commemorate the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. While it is a joyous occasion for many, ensuring safety during these celebrations is of paramount importance. Here are some practical safety tips and advice to help you enjoy a safe and memorable Guy Fawkes Night:

Fireworks Safety Tips:

1.  Purchase fireworks from reputable sources: Buy fireworks from licensed sellers to ensure their quality and compliance with safety standards.

2.  Read the instructions: Before using any fireworks, carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

3.  Designate a responsible adult: Assign a responsible adult to oversee the handling of fireworks and ensure that safety protocols are followed.

4.  Keep a safe distance: When setting off fireworks, maintain a safe distance from structures, vehicles, and spectators to prevent accidents.

5.  Never relight malfunctioning fireworks: If a firework fails to ignite or fully detonate, do not attempt to relight it. Wait for at least 20 minutes and then soak it in water before disposing of it.

Bonfire Safety Tips:

1.  Check local regulations: Before lighting a bonfire, check with local authorities to ensure that permits are obtained and that it is legal to have a bonfire in your area.

2.  Choose the location wisely: Select an open, clear area away from buildings, trees, and overhead wires for the bonfire. Ensure that it is a safe distance from spectators.

3.  Build your bonfire on the day:  November is a key hibernation month for many species. Animals such as hedgehogs and toads can often make nests in pre-built bonfires, so avoid doing this.

4. Avoid using accelerants: Do not use petrol or other accelerants to light the bonfire. Instead, use kindling and firelighters to start the fire safely.

5.  Monitor the bonfire: Assign a responsible person to monitor the bonfire at all times and have a water source nearby in case of emergencies.

6.  Extinguish the fire properly: Once the bonfire has burned down, extinguish the embers completely with water to prevent accidental fires.

General Safety Tips:

1.  Keep pets indoors: The loud noises and bright lights from fireworks can frighten pets. Keep them indoors during firework displays to prevent them from running away or getting injured.

2.  Wear appropriate clothing: When attending bonfires, wear clothing made of natural fibres that are less likely to catch fire.

3.  Stay alert and sober: Avoid consuming alcohol or substances that impair judgment when handling fireworks or near bonfires.

By following these safety tips and guidelines, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable Guy Fawkes Night for yourself, your loved ones, and your community!
