Change a Life Story

One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. This is a crossroads with far-reaching consequences. Without solid reading foundations, these children enter secondary education already behind, struggling to access the curriculum, losing confidence, and facing diminished life chances before they have had a chance to spread their wings. Literacy unlocks every other subject, and without it, too many young people are being locked out of their potential.
But there is a simple, tangible way to make a difference right here in Tamworth and the surrounding areas. Schoolreaders, a national children's literacy charity, is urgently recruiting volunteers to listen to children read in local primary schools. The premise is beautifully straightforward: you give a little time, and you receive the immeasurable reward of watching a child's confidence bloom, page by page.
You do not need a teaching qualification, just a good grasp of written English, a patient ear, and a genuine enjoyment of spending time with children. Volunteers are asked to commit to listening once a week during term time for a full academic year. Holidays and the occasional week off are absolutely fine; the charity understands that life happens.
If you can spare just one hour a week, you can help rewrite a child's life-story. To find out more, visit www.schoolreaders.org or call 01234 924111. The children of Tamworth need you.
