Five easy things to prep now to make the festive season easier.

Christmas has a way of sneaking up on even the most organised among us. One moment it's Halloween, and the next you're fighting for the last turkey in the supermarket on Christmas Eve. The secret to a stress-free festive season isn't frantic December activity, it's quiet, unhurried preparation in November. Here are five simple tasks you can tick off now, leaving you free to actually enjoy December.

1. Write and Send Your Christmas Cards Early

November is the perfect time to tackle Christmas cards. Buy them now while selection is at its best, write them in batches over a few evenings, and send them by the end of the month. If you're posting internationally, early November is genuinely your deadline. Bonus: you'll avoid the December post office queues entirely, and your cards will be the first to arrive on friends' mantelpieces.

2. Declutter Before the Decorations Come Out

Nothing makes a home feel chaotic faster than Christmas clutter layered on top of everyday clutter. Spend a few November weekends clearing surfaces, sorting cupboards, and donating anything you no longer use. Pay particular attention to the areas where decorations will go. the mantelpiece, windowsills, and hallway. You'll thank yourself when the tree goes up and there's actually space for it.

3. Test Your Christmas Lights & Decorations

There's nothing worse than discovering half your fairy lights are dead on the day you decorate. Dig out your decorations in November, untangle the lights, and test every set. Replace dead bulbs or buy replacements now while stock is plentiful. Check your artificial tree for damage, and give everything a quick dust. Store it all back neatly, ready to deploy in December.

4. Plan Your Gift List and Start Shopping

November is the golden window for gift shopping. Prices are still reasonable, stock is abundant, and delivery times are normal. Write your full list, set a budget, and start buying—especially for anyone you'll need to post to. Ordering early also means you can wrap as you go, spreading the task over weeks rather than facing a marathon wrapping session on 23 December.

5. Book Travel, Tickets, and Appointments

If you're travelling over Christmas, book trains, flights, or coaches in November, prices climb steeply as December approaches. The same goes for festive theatre tickets, panto seats, and restaurant bookings for Christmas parties or meals out. Don't forget practical appointments: if you want a haircut, colour, or beauty treatment before the big day, hairdressers and nail bars book up fast. Secure your slot now.
