Reduce Road Deaths
Remember this National Road Victim Month: Every Number is a Life

August marks National Road Victim Month, a time to remember the thousands of lives lost and forever changed on our roads. Founded by the charity RoadPeace in 1998, this annual observance serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of road traffic collisions and a call for greater vigilance behind the wheel.
The statistics are sobering. In 2024 alone, 1,671 people died on UK roads, and a further 28,804 suffered serious, life-changing injuries. That is an average of five people killed every single day. Behind each statistic is a family in turmoil, facing trauma that can last a lifetime.
What makes these figures even more devastating is that so many of these collisions are entirely preventable. Analysis of road traffic accidents consistently points to the "Fatal Five" behaviours: excessive speed, distraction, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, careless driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
These are not just numbers, they are mothers, fathers, children, and friends. They are people whose futures have been stolen, and families left to pick up the pieces. Every single one of these tragedies was avoidable. Before you speed, glance at your phone, or get behind the wheel after a drink, remember the human cost.
