TV: Chief of War (Apple TV)

A historical drama series starring Jason Momoa, who also co-created the series. It tells the story of Kaʻiana, a Hawaiian warrior, as he tries to unite the islands before Western colonisation in the late 18th century. An epic historical drama based on true events focusing on the unification of the Hawaiian Islands during a period of internal conflict and looming Western influence. The series aims to provide an authentic portrayal of Hawaiian culture and history, with both Momoa and Sibbett being of Native Hawaiian heritage, and performed by a predominantly Polynesian cast.

Reviews highlight the film's depiction of the pandemic's impact on mental states, paranoia, and societal division, with some critics finding it a powerful, if unsettling, portrayal of modern America. The sheriff's character devolves into a psychotic state, fuelled by conspiracy theories and paranoia. The tragicomedy, and surreal, gory violence, makes this a new Aster twist not to be missed!

Music: Volver, Sofia Kourtesis (out from 1st August)

Sofia Kourtesis’ newest EP is a mesmerising blend of electronic warmth and emotional depth, showcasing her talent for crafting immersive soundscapes. With its pulsating beats and ethereal melodies, feels both nostalgic and forward, thinking, blending house and techno influences with a distinctly personal touch. Kourtesis’ production is polished yet intimate, as if each layer has been carefully woven to evoke a sense of longing and renewal, fitting for a title that translates to "return" in Spanish.

The interplay of rhythmic precision and dreamy synths creates a hypnotic energy, making Volver as suited for introspective listening as it is for the dance floor. Kourtesis’ Peruvian-German heritage subtly colours the track, adding richness without overt cultural signposting. It’s a testament to her ability to merge global influences into a cohesive, emotive whole.

This EP is a radiant highlight in Kourtesis’ discography and proof of her skill in turning electronic music into something deeply human.
