Film: Marty Supreme (Dir. Josh Safdie, in cinemas 26th December)

Marty Supreme is a sports comedy-drama following Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), a cocky ping-pong hustler in 1950s New York determined to achieve greatness. Loosely inspired by real-life champion Marty Reisman, this fictionalised account charts his quest to transform ping-pong into a respected professional sport, a dream no one else shares. Confident in his talent and his custom "Marty Supreme" orange ball, Marty believes the sport can one day fill stadiums. His relentless pursuit of the world championship, however, is complicated by a transactional affair with a famous, unhappily married movie star (Gwyneth Paltrow) and dealings with the "ping-pong mafia." The film explores the costs of ambition and the sacrifices required to achieve an impossible goal.

Music: Sam Fender - People Watching (out from 5th December)

Sam Fender’s third album, People Watching, is a triumphant evolution that solidifies his status as a premier voice in modern rock. The album sees Fender refining his signature, heart-on-sleeve songwriting, trading some of the youthful fury of his earlier work for a more nuanced and introspective maturity. While his anthemic, Springsteen-esque soundscapes remain, they are now paired with deeper lyrical excavations of anxiety, grief, and the complexities of human connection.

Fender’s trademark emotional depth and cinematic arrangements powerfully capture the fragility of modern life without sacrificing the grand, crowd-pleasing melodies that define his sound. ‘People Watching’ is not just a collection of songs, but a resonant commentary on our times, marking a significant step forward in an already spectacular career and proving his artistry only grows more compelling.
