Summer Safety for Pets

Summer is a fantastic time to get outdoors with our pets, but warmer weather can bring a few seasonal hazards that every owner should be aware of.
Heatstroke is one of the biggest risks during hot weather. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets can all overheat quickly, especially during the hottest part of the day. Always ensure your pet has access to fresh drinking water, plenty of shade and somewhere cool to rest.
If you're walking your dog, remember that pavements can become extremely hot. A good rule is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
Never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly and become life threatening.
For pets who enjoy swimming, take care around open water. Strong currents, hidden hazards and blue-green algae can all pose serious risks.
Summer also brings more open doors, windows and garden gates, so it's worth taking extra care to prevent adventurous pets from making an unexpected escape.
With a little planning and a few simple precautions, you and your furry family members can enjoy a safe, happy and fun-filled summer.
